A player gains a point if they hit the ball over the net without the opponent returning it successfully. Points will also be awarded to the opposing player if:

  • a player fails to return the ball to the opponent’s side of the net.
  • a player allows the ball to bounce more than once on their side of the table before returning it.
  • the ball bounces on the player’s side of the net after they hit the ball.
  • a player hits the ball more than once in one return.
  • a player hits the ball before it bounces on their side of the table.
  • a player hits the ball with anything other than the racket (the hand below the wrist is officially considered a part of the racket)
  • a player hits the ball over the net but the ball lands off the table.
  • a player makes contact with their non-playing hand on the table when attempting to hit the ball.
  • a player hits the ball into the net and it does not land on the opponent’s side of the table. If the ball hits the net but still lands on the opponent's side, neither player gets a point and the serve must be taken again.
  • If the ball is served lower than 16cm into the air.
